Help for Authors

  1. What am I really trying to do?
  2. How am I going to do it?
  3. How do I find a publisher?
  4. How do I sell it?
  5. How do I structure a piece of writing?
  6. How do I write it?

How am I going to do it?

By being thoroughly well organised.

By knowing where you are going, and what you want to achieve, so you have an effective route map charting every step of your way.

This sounds like the classic Catch 22 situation. How do I know how to be organised if I don’t know how I’m going to do it?

First you must understand the problems associated with each step of the route, the solutions to these will give you the map and the timetable. I’ve chosen these two words for the analogy carefully, because maps and timetables are readily available, and there are many books in the market covering just this sort of subject. Some of those I found useful are listed in the Writing Advice and Getting Published pages shown here.

The key elements required then are as follows:

  1. A good subject to write about.
  2. A clear and inspiring writing technique.
  3. A sympathetic and diligent editor.
  4. An honest literary agent.
  5. A competent and economical printer.
  6. An efficient and respected publisher.

Finding any one of these key elements can be almost impossible, and you need all of them.
